Former Parksvillian Alexandria Maillot is one of the top 10 finalists at the Variety’s Got Talent competition.

She is an up and coming Canadian musician with roots in Parksville and Alexandria Maillot continues to make an impression in the music industry.

Singing basically since she was born, the talented singer, songwriter and musician is now 19 years old and is about to release her debut album next month. She is also one of the top 10 finalists for the Variety’s Got Talent competition and will perform before a panel of judges on February 3 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Vancouver.

Maillot said she was fortunate to be chosen as a finalist after she sent in an audition video where she sang Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and played the ukulele.

Now living in Vancouver, the Ballenas Secondary School grad said she plans to wow the judges at the finals where she will perform Make You Feel My Love a song originally performed by Bob Dylan but recently covered by Adele. She said although she has some original music which will be on her upcoming CD, she wants to perform a song that the judges know.

“I was considering an original song but I want to hit them with something they will be able to relate to more,” she said, adding, “it is not the easy route but the safe route and hopefully it will work like a charm.”

Maillot made the top 10 in Variety’s competition last year, but Shylo Sharity won in 2011 and she has been performing steadily since then, even opening for country music legend Wynonna Judd.

Maillot said winning the contest would open a lot of doors for her, particularly since the winner will receive a Tom Lee Rising Star package and appear on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon which airs live on Global BC February 11 and 12. The winner will be selected by a panel of celebrity and industry judges, including music manager, Bruce Allen, Global BC’s Steve Darling, Spirit of the West’s Vince Ditrich and 100.5 The Peak’s Tamara Stanners.

Maillot is hoping Ditrich who lives in Nanoose Bay will have a soft spot for her. She met the drummer and music producer when she was just 12 years old when she was at the Vancouver Island Music Awards.

“I hope he remembers me,” she said.

She also hopes to make an impression on Allen because for more than 30 years, he has been a cornerstone in the Canadian entertainment industry, guiding the careers of musicians, producers and sports figures. Allen has been a major force in the music world managing the likes of Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, Martina McBride and Michael Buble just to name a few.

Maillot said she hopes Allen notices her because she is putting out her album soon and will be putting a team together to promote it.

The CD is called Just Another Girl and has seven songs that were recorded at different studios in Vancouver.

“If I could get him on my team that would be amazing. I want them to acknowledge my existence and create a relationship.”

She agreed that in the music business networking is important and she is at a point in her life where she is able to get her name out there.

“I am at the age right now where I can network and go to pubs,” she stated but agreed, “I don’t drink and I have been called the lamest 19 year old. When I am at the bar I order hot chocolate.”

Maillot may only be 19 years old but she has a lifetime of music experience and an impressive resume from performing opportunities that have included; showcasing her talents to audiences overseas in Egypt and Romania, winning numerous competitions like the PNE Shaw Star Discovery Talent Search and Victoria Idol, being featured on Virgin Radio’s Best of BC program, and catching the attention of impresario David Foster and earning a spot on stage with famed singer Jann Arden during a televised concert in Toronto.

She definitely hopes to catch the attention of the Variety judges on Feb. 3 because if she wins she will get to perform on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon, a charity she said she would be honored to be a part of.

“It would be amazing … I love the charity. I was fortunate to be a part of it last year. If I get to do the telethon that will be really nice.”

She said she still hasn’t decided what she will wear during her performance. She admits a lot of people tell her she looks like Adele so she will be doing some serious dress shopping over the next few days.

I know my last blog was tardy, but I have a very decent excuse this time. Cold season bit me hard, my friends. I hope few of you have had to endure a nasty flu this year like I had to. If I had to choose between being sick and eating a can of worms… Well, I’d probably choose being sick, but it definitely falls under the FML category. But, other than looking like a zombie for more than a month, December has been stupendous.

For one, I TURNED NINETEEN. Yes, 1-9. I know, for some of you, I am still a baby. But, when you are a starving musician trying to make a name for yourself, not being allowed in to your own show at a club can get a little annoying. So, I am more than excited. And, no, in case you were wondering, I did not waste my nineteenth birthday partying the night away. Seeing as I don’t drink, I skipped the pub and stayed at home with my Yorkie, Tobias, watched the horrid 1970 classic Santa Claus Is Coming to Town with my mother (whom pointed out that Mrs. Clause really let herself go), consumed more calories in one night than I had eaten in a week, and drank the only shot I had on my birthday; a shot of freshly juiced ginger root. Sure, you may think it was lame, but I consider it one of the nicest birthdays I have had in a while. Plus, I really just don’t see the point in keeling over the toilet from an entire night of drinking. A. I’m not an idiot. B. I’d rather poke my eyes out.

Secondly- and I need not give it an introduction- but… CHRISTMAS was three days ago. It certainly didn’t feel like Christmas, given the lack of a Winter Wonderland, but regardless, I had a jolly good time. My family came from every direction and spent the special time of year together for a day filled with present exchanging, food preparing (and re-making due to some member’s lack of food baking skills), The Grinch (Jim Carrey in green version) viewing, Cranium ownage (on my team’s end)… and somehow ending the night with Top 20 Most Shocking Videos: Seniors Gone Wild Edition on Spike. Overall, this year was a success. The one downside was there weren’t any Tim Hortons open. Who’d’a thunk? Considering the apocalypse is apparently less than a year away, I can say my potential last Christmas is one I will always remember. Everyone was genuinely happy, and that is everything I could ever want for my family.

As the year ends, I have one question for you all.. What is your New Year’s resolution? I shun all of you who roll yours eyes when asked this question, as having a resolution is something everyone should consider. Why? Well, at least you have an ambition of some sort. And, why not? Sure, most resolutions fizzle out by week 3 in February, but regardless, everyone should make a goal that betters themselves, whether it be something small, or something long term (like planting a garden, spending less money on your abnormally large shoe collection, or taking up fencing). I haven’t really decided on a New Year’s resolution yet, but I definitely think my goal for 2012 is to just take chances and reach for the stars at every opportunity possible. My life has taken so many unexpected turns in 2011, that it was really hard to keep my composure and let my guard down. But, whatever 2012 throws my way, I will take it with a grain of salt and just use it as fuel for whatever plans I decide on. That is why 2012 will be a year of adventure, discovery and learning for myself.

To sign off, I’d love to share with you a link for a free download of one of my songs that was featured on the PlayItLoud Compilation album. The song featured, All We Need, will be on my album Just Another Girl set for release early 2012. Oh yeah, in case you were wondering when that will be coming out, keep a CLOSE eye during the next few weeks.. As it is a surpise! Mwuahahahahahaha…

Happy Holidays!

As I sit here typing this, I realize how much of a horrible procrastinator I am. I think procrastination is a mental illness; a chemical reaction in the brain which occurs when a timeline begins to dwindle to its last few days. It’s horrible, really. It leaves you feeling like crap, but you consistently keep putting off whatever it is as it just makes sense. But, in truth, it makes no sense at all. Looking back at the few times I have recently procrastinated, the baggage just keeps on building up until you reach your breaking point, at which point you slowly have to pick up the fragmented pieces and glue them all together, somehow, in a matter of hours. Procastination, they really should figure out a cure for it. Maybe I need to take my vitamins more often. Maybe I just like the feeling of being weighed down by self loathing. All I know is, I am through with my relationship with procrastination. It’s like a piece of cake. It’s right there in front of you. Why not have it? Well, for one, you promised yourself you’d get back in to shape after eating every piece of cake that came your way without a care in the last year. Two, you had plans to go on a jog, and you know that if you eat this piece of cake, not only will you have to wait another hour until it settles in your stomach to ensure a successful workout, but it’ll be dark by that time, and you hate jogging at night. When is it time to ninja chop that piece of cake in the jugular and say “Damn you, you sweet, delectable spawn of Satan. I’ve had it with your decieving ways”? I think that day is today.

Procrastination numero uno: I haven’t vlogged in over a year. That is changing tomorrow. October 28, 2011. I convinced myself I stood alone in the world for not having an iPod to video random stuff like my face and fish and buildings, and you know what? I bought it, and haven’t picked it up for even the sheer enjoyment of music listening in almost a year. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? Is it because I sort of hate how long it takes me to piece together a vlog? In truth, I love it. It’s awesome. Nope, it might have to do with the fact that I continually find myself talking about nothing important. Regardless, that changes tomorrow. And, if I don’t stick to my word, I owe whoever reads this and comments first $20.

Procrastination numero deux: I bought two Crest White Strips packages, almost finished the first one, started the second package for whatever reason and didn’t finish that one either. Does this have to do with the fact that I hate the feeling of it on my teeth? Not really, it makes me feel like I have dentures which gives me an excuse to talk to my family in an 80-year-old dutchman accent for a half hour until I have to take them off. Or maybe, it has to do with the fact that I decided to do the whole two-a-day cycle, which is inconvenient as I always find myself wanting to devour apple sauce halfway through the second round. Enough with the excuses; that changes tomorrow. I want pearly whites when I open my mouth.

Procrastination numero trios: I have a hard time with sitting down and finishing anything that involves using my brain, i.e. writing a song, finishing a puzzle, etc. I have been working on a book for almost 5 years – which I will not name until it is finished (see what I’m doing? I’m pressuring myself to complete it) – and in the last few weeks this surge of creative energy has come and gone through me, because when I go to write something in my shiny journal dedicated to this book, I write about 50 words, re-read it, then scrap it as it sounds derivitive or overly facetious. Well, I am setting up a plan for myself: Write 500 words a day; no revisions, no alterations. And, at the end of it all, once I have made it to the finish line, I can go rewriting-buckwild.

I am defeating this feebleness today and for always. Thank you Occupy Wall St. initiative which has spawned around the globe for planting that little seed in my head that it’s time to take action and make changes in my life for the better. It sure feels sweet to have that haze leave my head and show me the path to a better, more productive me.

Speaking of procastination, this blog is delayed, and I need to post the last few blogs I wrote for Youthink Magazine. The first blog is on an amazing awesome teen singer/songwriter named Kate Morgan, who chatted with me in the midst of her crazy awesome Canadian tour alongside Winnepeg pop artist James Struthers. The second blog came to fruition after I decided next year will be the year I will focus on touring to promote my debut album, Just Another Girl, and got to talk with Vancouver artist Christina Maria whos spent most of her time over the last year living in Zurich and touring around Europe. The third and final blog is on songwriting tips and advice featuring Nat Jay, whose songs have been featured on MTV, ABC, The CW, CTV, CBC and many more network television stations.

Thank you, once again, for reading til the end. I appreciate it. Feel free to send me a note or follow me on twitter (@alexandriasing) or become my friend on Facebook.

Au Revoir,

Alexandria

Well, it’s Summer… In September. As per usual, the weather has been sporadic, and anytime the sun decides to shine, I have either been busy doing shows, teaching songwriting classes, or writing/recording new material which will be on my debut EP coming out this fall, Just Another Girl. However, the last few days here in lovely Vancouver have been more than decent, and I have officially developed a slight sunburn (I did lather myself in sun block, by the way). And, whilst the sun shines, I am finding opportunities are arising as well. I can’t really pin point any of them at the moment, as they are all still up in the air, but what I can tell you is I am extremely excited for my future endeavours in music, and I can’t wait to tell you all soon enough.

On another note, my blogging with Youthink Magazine continues, and I have two new articles up. The first is on schmoozing; a skill you have to acquire and certainly doesn’t come naturally to all (like my awkward self). You can read that blog here: http://www.youthink.ca/yt/blogs/musical-mind/how%20to%20schmooze. The second write-up is on getting your songs placed in television/film, with some useful tips from music supervisor Natasha Duprey. You can check that out here as well: http://www.youthink.ca/yt/blogs/musical-mind/how-get-your-music-placed-tv-and-film.

I’m not too sure if you have figured this out yet, but I absolutely love to write. I write everyday. I write every hour. I write until my fingers are sore and my hand is stuck in a pen-holding position. I love it. So, if you enjoy hearing me ramble and whatnot, I’d love for you to join my mailing list. It is a new feature with this new site, and I would love to start shooting off emails to you all with goodies like free downloads and samples of new, unreleased material (which I have, by the way!) and breaking news/tour info. So, if you feel like hopping on the music train, I’d love to journey with you as I pave my career, slowly and steadily.

I can’t really think of anything else to type of at this moment, other than I gave in and signed up for Canada’s Got Talent. There is definitely a sort of pride that comes to each and every self respecting musician that turns all egotistical when talking about reality must television shows, like we are better than it or something. But an opportunity is an opportunity, and who knows, right?

Ciao,

I have been very busy commuting from Vancouver to the island my entire summer break teaching a heap load of workshops. I haven’t gotten to enjoy the sun much, but then again, I just burn, and I have been loving every moment spent teaching music. In the midst of my crazy schedule, I have been recording music, writing blogs, and planning a ton of future shows/tours to go along with my debut CD which will be coming out at the end of this year.

For starters, I have now become a blogger for Youthink Magazine! Here’s my first short interlude: http://www.youthink.ca/yt/blogs/musical-mind/interlude
And here’s my 1st official blog titled “Time”: http://www.youthink.ca/yt/blogs/musical-mind/time

I will be posting a blog monthly, talking about everything from love, loss, life lessons and a kid named Bieber.

Recently, I performed at a fundraiser raising money for youth in the Comox Valley who are serious about pursuing a career in music to help fund professional recordings/professional videos to help build a resume up for all of them. Most people might not understand the importance of this, but it is something that is so crucial to have. It is my duty to hand pick those who are most eligible for this; this is an incredibly difficult decision as I know a heap full of teens who are incredibly talented and worthy! So, I will be posting more about this as the story develops.

Finally, I have been hard at work recording new music, and will be posting snipets and demos of what I am doing on here more frequently to keep you all engaged and excited. As well, I will FINALLY post another vlog! It is so overdue it is not even funny.

That’s enough for now, and remember to come check out my show August 18 at the Office in Victoria at 8pm! It’s free, so what’s stopping you?

Oh, one more thing. I went into Serious Coffee today to grab my coffee fix, and they had a whiteboard with a “Quote of the Day” written on it. Today’s quote was, “The path of success is always in construction”. They didn’t have a reference to who it was quoted from, but to whomever came up with such a simple yet profound quote, I have one thing to say to you: Thank you.
